Which jewelry tools should you use with a router?

Since we began to make tools for cuemakers and luthiers, jewelers have been using some of our smaller end mills and engraving tools for cutting butter and blue and green jeweler's wax. We have redesigned some of our tools and developed several new ones in response to a constant demand for long flute lengths in smaller diameter mills. These high aspect ratios are part of our new mold and sign-making tools family.

How to maintain the Mills and Setting tools?

With the mill essential to a plant's performance, it pays to ensure that mills are maintained and managed to maintain. Maintenance is often reactive due to a breakdown. As resources are being rushed to the site and maintenance personnel are under unnecessary pressure to re-establish the manufacturing plant. The result is higher repair costs. In an ideal world, only planned breakdowns would ever provide maintenance for the mill. While this ideology can never be achieved through good planning, potential problems can be identified early, saving thousands of dollars and spending hours.

Choosing the right cutters

Look at a few current trends in cutting tool technology:

  • Machining of aluminum:
  • Face milling
  • Mold machining of steel
  • High-feed milling.

Today's milling market requires efficiency and affordability, and this is no stranger to the mold-making industry. Mold-making companies face an economic downturn and a competitive global market where the machine parts they need, the machines they use, and the materials they machine are becoming more complex.

With technology rapidly evolving, one could overlook the various products on the market. While Carbide producers change their geometry and upgrade their technology, a caster has a range of cutters to choose from. Milling cutters selectionvaries from application to an application capable of machining multiple materials and software.

Special Tips

Here are three special tips to keep your mill at its best.

1.   Keep your mill clean.

This may look easy – but the factory is cleaning a fundamental aspect – and this step is often overlooked. If a mill is thoroughly cleaned, 'leaks and crakes' are identified earlier, less cost of repair, and fixed before the equipment fails.

  • Hot components should not be cleaned (especially castings)
  • Do not use water sprays or jets to clean seals.
  • Make sure that at least employees are properly trained.
  • Consult with the mill's supplier.

2.   Regularly inspect your mill.

After ensuring that the mill is kept clean, the next logical step is to regularly examine it and ensure that leaks or damage are detected early. Most mill control panels show sensor readings of critical mill pieces, which can be used reliably during operation to inspect these pieces.

3.   Keep records on your mill regularly.

The majority of control panels will show transducer readings from various checkpoints and even provide alarms at 'high' and 'low' alarms before 'high' or 'low' alarm settings are tampered with by molding. This is helpful to protect the mill, but 'high' and 'low' warnings are not proactive but reactive and can only sometimes warn of the inevitable. The monitoring process is therefore essential to identify trends in any problems that develop. Good monitoring includes: being methodical with inspections, maintaining good inspection records, and tracking records and values over time.
